ILMEA Vocal Jazz Audition Parts

1. ILMEA picks an excerpt from “Turn That Frown Upside Down”. Students try out with a backing accompaniment.

2. ILMEA picks an excerpt from “Two for the Road.” Students try out a cappella.

3. Tonal Skills

• Four-note 7th chords - chords will be performed on Eb for Sopranos and Tenors and C for Altos and Basses. Two of the below will be performed on the audition.

• Dominant 7th Chord

• Major 7th Chord

• Minor 7th Chord

• Fully Diminished 7th Chord

• Scales - to be performed also on Eb for Sopranos and Tenors and C for Altos and Basses. Both scales will be performed.

• Blues Scale

• Chromatic Scale

4. Improvisation

   1. 12-bar blues. Students will audition by listening to 12 bars and then improvising for 24 bars (2 choruses of the 12 bar blues) and then stopping.
